THE TENTH SUNDAY
Life is such a precious thing. Unfortunately, we tend to take it for granted. What we must try to do remind ourselves daily that it is God’s gift to each of us and to receive it daily as being entrusted to us for safe keeping. Then, I hope, we will be continually amazed at the wonder and beauty that life holds. We might even be drawn into the mystery of our self.
But there is much more at stake in the Gospel. In the raising to life of the widow of Nain’s only son. On the one hand the widow would be without social protection and status. On the other is eternal life. Jesus is the source of life to all who believe in him.
Only God has the power to overcome death. It is clear from the miracle at Nain that Jesus has the power in himself. And we see the compassionate way in which he exercised it. Jesus restored the boy to life and returned him to his mother. On seeing this the people knew that god had visited them in the person of Jesus.
God visits us also. God is the Lord of All and in times of loss and sadness has compassion on us in various ways which we might not be able to understand at the time. Let always find comfort in the hope that our trust in God will enable us to get on with our lives.
