Scripture Reflection – Pentecost Sunday (3-4th of June)
Pentecost draws us into a world caught up in transformation. The apostles huddled behind a locked door in the upper room or fear of the Jews. They are wondering if they too might suffer the same fate as Jesus their leader. The future must have seemed very uncertain and life expendable. But, Jesus enters their maudlin lives and transforms their gloom with the message of his presence – he is risen and alive in their midst – he wishes them peace and the life of the Spirit.
We are told that the apostles were filled with joy at seeing the risen Jesus. All their doubts and misgivings are transformed. They are renewed in spirit and purpose as Jesus breaths on them imparting the Holy Spirit who will empower their coming ministry to be the Good News of Jesus Christ through the proclamation of their lives.
Our lives are similar to the apostles in the upper room. There have been times when we have found ourselves powerless for one reason or another – we were trapped by uncertainty or fear. No doubt there will be times when we will feel the same. However, we have lived through those times. We have been able to be transformed by them to be who we are at present. Within our growth is the Spirit – accompanying us, sustaining our wills and nourishing our sense of self.
Pentecost, in the present day, is understanding how the Holy Spirit transforms our lives in the ordinary moments of life. The Holy Spirit gently motivates us in our discipleship of the Good News of Jesus Christ through the proclamation of our lives.
